Prep Time Montage!

Eli blushed, “Sorry, I didn’t communicate that well, I guess. The batteries need to be taken out any time after the array, but you don’t need to exit immediately after that; you just need to make sure they are offline before you exit.”

Speaking up, I added, “You and Marcel’s only actual objectives are to sow chaos and disable their battery backups. You guys are going to keep attention focused on you so that Mila and I can do our thing. We’ll have comms and keep in touch with the team. Once we complete our objectives, we’ll meet you at the exit for pickup. When we give the signal, Eli will cut the power. That will also be the signal for Ralph and Jasper to haul ass to the door and pick us up.”

Once again, Mila raised a difficult question: “Why don’t you just teleport us out at that point? The array should be down, and there shouldn’t be anything stopping you if you’ve got a mana artifact.”

“The artifact is one-time use, and any mage would likely be pretty exhausted at that point. As powerful as you are, Mila, I doubt even you would have the juice left to teleport several people. I can and will burn the artifact for mana if I have no other choice. However, I’d much rather save it for what may come after the heist. I might still have a fight on my hands when I go to retrieve my parents. It would suck to go through all of this and then fail at the rescue, the most important thing to me.”

Mila grunted in acknowledgment.

I didn’t know her story. Davin had mentioned that she hated them and that it had something to do with losing family, but that was all I knew. Still, I could see some sympathy in her eyes when I mentioned saving my family. She got it.

For that matter, it seemed to be an explanation that all my new allies could accept, so I left it at that.
